‘You can’t make an ugly sound in this room’

A New Jersey optometrist with a ear for recording live music changed the sound of modern jazz in a meticulously crafted studio that has come to be known as “the cathedral of jazz.” Somewhat miraculously, Rudy Van Gelder’s studio still exists today, still faithful to his mysterious methods.
